High Line

I can't wait to get up to NYC to check out the newly opened High Line. The NY Times online edition featured an analysis of the first phase of the project by design critic Nicolai Ouroussoff accompanied by an excellent slide show. The initial renderings displayed a sensitive transparency that allowed the wildness and picturesque decrepitude of the old rail viaduct to intriguingly burst through the planned pathway. The final realization of the design by Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro is even more stunning in its interplay between new and old, wild and tame.

OK, Philadelphia, what's the plan for the Reading Viaduct?

Check out this interesting article about Vauban, a car-free planned community in suburban Freiburg, Germany. The article also notes trends toward reducing car use in other communities.
